of a very scary flare-up between israel and gaza. we do not know exactly what started this most recent round of fighting, but we do know that an israeli air strike killed the top commander of hamas in gaza on wednesday, and we know then that that was followed by rocket attacks aimed at southern israel and then tel aviv, and then today jerusalem. israel has been pounding gaza with air strikes. the attacks appeared to be rapidly escalating including signs that israel is preparing for a ground incursion into gaza. "the new york times" citing reports of israeli tanks massing on the border with gaza. amid all of this in the world, today washington was consumed with two major issues. the first was the start of negotiations to head off a deliberate crisis that d.c. created for itself so they could come to a few new deal between the parties and between the president and congress on spending and taxes and the deficit. that negotiation started today. the white house said top level white house staffers will be continuing those negotiations that started today, even while the president is off on this big

of western europe, canada, most of our allies, most democracies -- not israel, india and some other countries -- but most countries are due to adhere to protocol i. during the '80s the united states conducted a series of war games, they changed sides and so on and the side that you follow protocol i rules, guess what? they always lost the war game. during the 1990s at amnesty international charged the united nations -- charged the united states air force with serious violations of the laws of war during the bombing campaigns in kosovo and yugoslavia. they brought these charges before a u.n.-sponsored international criminal tribunal for the former yugoslavia which uses protocol i, so amnesty international decried the consistent failure to give effective warning to civilians before bombing. human rights watch complained that the u.s. air force was too concerned with insuring pilot safety. these were american lawyers writing this, complaining about the american air force, too worried about the safety of american service members. so these are the global rules. when people talk about global rules,

in the " the new york times"about the back and forth between israel and hamas. in "the washington post." good morning from washington, d.c. on the democrats in line. i voted -- will survive before the bush cuts which were temporary. perhaps this should only be extended 50% instead of 100%. i think the republicans won the house. they both want something. i think they both need to work together and the constituents of both should pay a little more. that is how i feel. host: do you think yesterday both sides expressed a willingness on both parts? caller: i hope they realize the important thing is solving the crisis, not taking care of their particular constituents a lawn. host: let's hear from one more call. this is herman on the republican line. caller: yes, i want to say just because you are on a runaway train for the last 40 years -- we went through a great depression and came through it just fine. republicans and democrats both do not have the ability to solve this problem we are in. they are smart people, do not get me wrong. we need to go over the fiscal cliff for the good of the country.
